Sailing in and around Puget Sound and planning to sail further

Details on tug boat races

Ben asked about seeing the tug boat races from the water. The races start in front of the grain elevator and end at pier 62/63 or just passed Bell Harbor Marina. If you wanted to mill around to the west of the course, I'm sure they would let you. You might be able to be inside (to the east) of the course but that seems unlikely. I did not find any information on the event or law enforcement web sites about distances or anything like that. I would just show up, they can't kick you out of Puget Sound. I'd expect lots of enforcement out that day, be safe, and make sure you meet all of the USCG Requirements.

Here's the schedule:

Saturday, May 10: U.S. Oil Seattle Tugboat Race Championships
The 24th Annual competition is the largest tugboat race in the world. This year, more than 40 boats are expected to participate.

  • Fireboat Display Noon
  • Tugboat Demonstration 12:10 p.m.
  • Abandon Ship Demonstration 12:20 p.m.
  • Coast Guard Rescue 12:50 p.m.
  • Parade to Post 1:15 p.m.
  • Class C Classic Tug Race 2 p.m.
  • Environmental Demonstration 2:15 p.m.
  • Class B Harbor Tug Race 2:40 p.m.
