Sailing in and around Puget Sound and planning to sail further

Solar Power and other electrical things

I was kayaking on Lake Union this weekend and despite the fact that it was fairly warm there was no one out. The thing I love about kayaking is the movement feels good, very circular like riding a bike. I don’t like the pounding feeling of running (and neither do my knees). As were coming in I noticed the Electric Boat company docking across the way from the kayak place. I loved the quiet boats, very fun. This press release about Sun21 got me thinking too. I really hope in the next 3-4 years there are some people out there proving the viability of Electrical power plants on sailboats. I think given the pluses of the quiet drive train and the (assumed) efficiencies of diesel generators over diesel engines that it would be well worth going electric. Plus you could supplement with solar, wind and towed generators. I’m not adding a lot of links to this post, but improving the electrical system and thinking hard about an electrical drive train is going to be key. One thing that comes to mind is the impact of the larger battery bank. Should I be looking at particular boats that are better suited for this? Not sure… lots to think about… lots of time to do it. ;-)
