Steve Hemry at Global Marine Surveyors. He was very pleasant and helpful. I provided him with the listing info on the steel schooner I'm interested in and after reviewing it he decided that he was not the best person for that particular job. He recommended me to Tom Pope of Port Angeles who has a lot of experience with metal hulls and commercial boats as well as recreational sailboats.
I engaged Tom for both a sea trial and survey and was very pleased with the result. I can recommend him highly. I am quite grateful to Steve Hemry for the referral.

Global is great. I recommend them highly.

Consider Matt Harris..is in Bellingham, but will travel to Seattle. Fine, honest surveyor, reputable firm, will give you a straight report. Seattle # is 206-285-8194.

I recently used Jerry Edwards, and I cannot say I was impressed with his service, though he seems to be respected in area and came very highly recommended. The survey report I received had Numerous factual errors and it took nearly a month and several calls to get a corrected report, which still has one error still uncorrected. Also after having three fiberglass specialists out two could not find the delamination Jerry said existed--both fiberglass men were surprised when I told them who had surveyed and both said they respected his work. I'm not an expert-but the discrepancy leaves me less than confident in the overall survey. Not what you want to send to your lender or the insurance company

Jay McEwen lokoed at my boat last year before I purchased it and I was very pleased with his level of attention and comments on the boat.

I put my faith in Jerry Edwards.
1) he's a sailor
2) WILL find most any defect
3) WON'T blow small defects up out of proportion
4) will tell YOU how you or yard can fix defects
5) he can also do the engine inspection, of course for an additional fee (few surveyors do this, so you would otherwise have to call in a separate
mechanic)
From my vantage as a broker, I have dealings with dozens of surveys over the course of a year -- Jerry's the one I chose for my boat.

Don Gardner, of Lighthouse Marine Services, surveyed my Catalina 30 about 6 years ago in Bellingham. He is a former Coast Guard engineer. I was very satisfied with his work. It was very educational to follow him around during his inspection, and I would definitely use his services again if necessary.

Capt. *** Thorsen, from Arlington, has an excellent reputation.

Matt Harris, out of Bellingham. He travels, surveyed the boat I then decided to purchase. He's done a subsequent survey for me. Very thorough.

Wow, three votes for Matt Harris. Getting three people on this list to agree to anything is a major accomplishment!

I agree with those that recommended Matt Harris as a surveyor in the Puget Sound area as well. What some of you may not know is that Matt was the foreman in building all those early Sceptre boats (like Pam has). I also believe he was a builder on the Crown boats as well. So he has had practical experience in boat building. He's very professional.

I second Matt Harris. He did Scamper a year ago when I bought her. I still refer to the survey for refereence to construction details, equipment list, and improcement ideas. The guy was full of good info.

I used Matt Harris for my original boat survey, and for a subsequent insurance survey. He is accurate, fair, and very detailed. He works out of Bellingham, but goes to Seattle all the time. That is where he did the purchase survey of Bordeaux.

I use Richard Day , He will even go on the sea trial with you . Which is very helpful.
His nick name is "Mad Dog Day." He knows his stuff. He lives on Bainbridge Island and is in the phone book.

Chuck with Inlet Diesel Inc. 360.491.4323 This guy did a survey on a boat for us and literally saved our butts. While the boat looked sweet he found a blister that after he pricked it led us to find that the boat was the "plug" and that the bottom paint was hiding a lot of fairing compound and fiberglass that was literally starving for resin. Had a glass expert in the yard look at her and his estimate to "fix" was $8,000 with no guarantees. Craft would have been uninsurable and the best part was that the guy only charged me $100.00 flat since he felt he had only done a partial survey on the boat. I'd highly recommend him to anyone at any time.

Another we've used and ultimately purchased our Cal 31 based upon his survey was Jerry Vander Yacht of Western Marine Surveyors out of Port Orchard. 360.876.9181 He travelled to Olympia on very short notice and charged a very reasonable fee for the survey. He was thorough and immediately sent me a second copy of the survey when I requested it. He also recommended and upon authorization did an oil analysis on our diesel engine so we'd have a baseline for future comparisons.

When I bought our Catalina 320 a year ago, we used McCrea Marine Surveyors at 206-362-2628, or cell phone 206-817-2628. Ned McCrea was great.
